Board To Vote On Name Changes

Members of the board of Southern Hancock Schools have discussed the naming of the Intermediate School as well as the Middle School for next year beginning at the September board meeting. That discussion was shared immediately in order to provide the opportunity for community feedback. At this point, the feedback we have received from the community has been largely in support of the new plan to align the school names with our high school and town.

In order to keep everyone informed, the current plan is for Southern Hancock board members to have a vote on the naming of the buildings at the November School Board meeting.

As a reminder, these are the two naming options being considered.

Original Plan New Consideration
5th & 6th Grade Building Name Brier Creek Intermediate New Palestine Intermediate
7th & 8th Grade Building Name Doe Creek Middle New Palestine Junior High

Southern Hancock Schools Receive ‘A’ Grade from IDOE

The Indiana State Board of Education awarded school and district letter grades this week. The Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock received the state’s top mark awarded to schools, which is an ‘A’ grade! Southern Hancock also saw improvements in the school letter grades across the board.  It is through the hard work of our teachers and students, as well as the support of parents and the community, that has influenced these results.

A district

Teachers and administrators are able to determine the effectiveness of the current programs and implementation of the curriculum this year as a result of the Indiana Department of Education utilizing the same test vendor and a consistent accountability system. Since 2014 there have been many changes in state academic standards, testing vendors, testing format, and the State accountability system.  The 2016-17 school year marked the second year in a row that students were tested over Indiana College and Career Standards and utilizing the same test.  It also marks the second year for the implementation of the current accountability system. The 2017-18 school year will mark the last year for this test vendor, format and the current accountability system. The state of Indiana will be changing to a new format and accountability system for the 2018-19 school year.

Please Update Your Inclement Weather Plans

It is getting time for us to think about winter weather.  Please make sure that your notification preferences are up to date in PowerSchool.  We will notify parents in a variety of modes if school is delayed or an e-learning day.  We will report the delays and closings to the local news outlets, put them on our website, and send out a message through PowerSchool.  You can find information here on how it is determined whether students will report to schools during times of inclement weather.

It is our intent to provide early notice when students will not report to school due to inclement weather.
